Adapting office buildings for climate change: literature review

Angela Connelly

This research focuses on adaptation options for the built environment, with a particular focus on Greater Manchester, in light of the climate change projections. It considers those retrofit options that are appropriate for commercial office buildings by increasing green space to provide cooling, or by introducing forms of sustainable urban drainage systems appropriate for larger buildings. It considers potential changes in the way that we use buildings as well as specific design interventions and includes observations on special considerations for structures considered to be of special architectural or historical interest.

The report highlights the potential synergies between adaptation and mitigation when retrofitting of the built environment. However, it was difficult to find case studies within Greater Manchester that had adopted the methods of climate change adaptation discussed which could be indicative of a cautious approach thus far.
